Are you interested in joining the Birss Research Group?

Openings for Graduate Students:

We are seeking motivated individuals who are interested in joining our efforts as graduate students to work in the clean energy, nanomaterials, and electrochemical biosensing areas, in which Dr. Birss is a world leader. The Birss group is well-funded and has access to cutting-edge instrumentation, including a wide variety of electrochemical methods, XRD, XPS, Auger methods, quartz crystal microbalance, AFT/STM, SEM, TEM, and more. In the Birss group, students work on an independent project with direct supervision from Dr. Birss as well as the assistance from experienced graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Projects include cannabis and pathogen sensor development, both high and low temperature fuel cells, CO2 conversion to useful products in electrolysis cells, and core@shell nanoparticles for use as electrocatalysts. Students in the Birss group also have the opportunity to work in an especially open and friendly environment, often in collaboration with other teams on campus.

The Birss group offers competitive stipends and benefits, as well as relocation assistance. Calgary is the 3rd largest cosmopolitan city in Canada and houses a wide variety of entertainment, cuisine, and recreational options. Calgary is also very close to the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park, which are superb for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

If you have any questions and are interested in joining the Birss group, please contact Dr. Birss at birss@ucalgary.ca

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations).

The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.
